Build Hope through Dialogue, Trust, and Mutual Respect – Archbishop Anthony Muheria

As the Church continues to observe the Year of Hope, Archbishop Anthony Muheria has urged families and the wider community to embrace a spirit of understanding, dialogue, and shared responsibility in their relationships with young people.

The Archbishop commended the Church for creating platforms where youth can express themselves and engage in meaningful conversations. He noted that such efforts have borne fruit and should be strengthened moving forward. He challenged families, particularly parents, to do the same by cultivating safe and open environments where their children feel heard and valued.

“Parents should not be quick to judge, constantly correct, or insult their children,” he said. “Instead, they should acknowledge their efforts, celebrate their achievements, and encourage them to grow.”

Archbishop Muheria also emphasized the importance of giving youth responsibilities. He explained that when young people are entrusted with meaningful tasks—whether at home, school, or in their communities—they begin to understand their capacity to contribute and support others.

“It is by being responsible for something that they learn the value of work, of giving, and of helping. This helps them grow in maturity, knowledge, and understanding,” he said.

He further encouraged parents to take time to listen to their children’s opinions, particularly when it comes to personal choices such as career paths. By doing so, he said, parents demonstrate trust and help build a foundation of mutual respect.

Quoting the Gospel of Luke 2:42, where Jesus stayed behind in the temple and later told His parents He must be in His Father’s house, Archbishop Muheria reminded families that even within the Holy Family, there were moments of deep listening and understanding.

He also directed a word to the youth, urging them to express their needs and thoughts in a respectful manner.

“Respect your parents, your elders, and your priests,” he said. “When you speak with humility and respect, it becomes easier for others to listen and walk with you.”

The Archbishop’s message comes at a time when many families are facing social and economic pressures. His call is a reminder that hope begins at home—with patient listening, open hearts, and mutual respect between generations.
