Kenya’s Tangaza University to Host Key Pope Benedict XVI Centenary Symposium on Africa’s Church Renewal

Global Initiatives Announced Ahead of Pope Benedict XVI’s Centenary

A worldwide programme of events has been unveiled to mark the centenary of Pope Benedict XVI, born Joseph Ratzinger, whose 100th birthday will fall on April 16, 2027.

The initiative, led by the Joseph Ratzinger–Benedict XVI Vatican Foundation, will feature more than ten events across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa throughout 2026. Coordinated by an international centenary committee, the programme seeks to revisit and deepen understanding of Benedict XVI’s theological and intellectual legacy.

According to Father Roberto Regoli, president of the Foundation, the centenary offers an opportunity to present Ratzinger’s thought as a meaningful contribution to contemporary ecclesial and cultural discussions. Central to this reflection are his interpretation of the Second Vatican Council, his emphasis on a personal encounter with Christ as the foundation of theology, and his insistence on reason as essential in understanding reality.

The commemorative year opened on April 16, 2026, (which would have marked Pope Benedict XVI’s 99thbirthday) in Rome with the presentation of the fourth volume of his selected writings, The Faith of the Future. The Future of the Church, at the Italian Embassy to the Holy See.

A series of academic and pastoral events will follow across various countries. In Austria, lectures will examine his role as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, while Italy will host a conference on his legacy and enduring relevance. India will convene a bishops–theologians colloquium reflecting on his theological journey, and Hungary will mark the publication of his works in translation with a study day on faith and philosophy.

In Latin America, Colombia will host an international conference on faith, hope, and charity inspired by his writings. France will hold a symposium in Paris focusing on his major lectures, while Austria will again gather scholars to explore key principles of his theology. Spain will highlight the beauty of the liturgy—one of Benedict XVI’s defining concerns—and unveil a statue in his honour.

In the United States, events will include the presentation of his collected works, Jesus of Nazareth, at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, alongside a conference examining the sources that shaped his theological vision.

A particularly significant moment for the African Church will take place in Nairobi, where Tangaza University in collaboration with Saint Mary’s University in Minnesota, will host the closing international symposium from November 18–21. Under the theme “Constellations of Hope: Africa and the Renewal of the Church in the Vision of Benedict XVI,” the gathering will reflect on how his theological insights continue to inform the Church’s mission within the African context. The symposium will also coincide with Tangaza University’s 40th anniversary.

The year-long programme will conclude with the awarding of the Ratzinger Prize in December 2026. Further details regarding events planned for 2027 are expected to be announced at a later stage.

Through these global initiatives, the Church seeks not only to honour the memory of Benedict XVI but also to engage afresh with a legacy that continues to shape theological reflection and the life of the Church today.
